The first review in a major publication for Facing Ali, July 15, 2009 in Variety, which is an important Hollywood Industry magazine. A few appreciated phrases below:

“…first-rate…” “…so compelling…” “…impeccably researched…” “…excruciatingly moving…” “…top-notch production values…” “…nuanced insights…” “…extraordinary tales…”

The full review is here.

As the review intimates, the ten boxers really were terrific. I have such affection, compassion and respect for their stories, and their candor. I hope putting a good review on line doesn’t seem full blown. Samantha said it was cool. Heck, these things are fleeting, opinions, but I really would like the film, and these guys’ stories, to be seen and heard—and Lord knows I’ve posted bad reviews, too.

What a fantastic review! I’m so glad that you’re getting the notice you deserve for the work. *kermitflails*

  2. Thanks lovely Erynn. It sure was fun meeting you in Seattle. I wore the Drink Chai, See God t-shirt today. I hope all is super well for you,

    Lots of love to you,

What a perfect still to include with the review! And what a great—and well deserved—review. Bravo! Bravo to Derik also!

And to Mr. Miller for such insightful editing. I realized the next day that I forgot to say that I thought the editing was fantastic. “Intimate” is the word that comes to mind.

And Samantha is right, post away! It’s your blog and you have every reason to be proud of this film. Keep posting—it’s how we know the film’s progression. We who know you, know your motives. And the glow of a job well done and acknowledged is also fleeting—enjoy it.

We are only human and you’re allowed you know.

Love to you and those you love,
